With Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal away on family vacation in Dubai, the security personnel attached to them will soon start following a ?recouping schedule?, where they will practice shooting, attend physical fitness programmes and develop their skills by watching videos related to security missions.

According to sources, the Punjab police personnel attached with the chief minister?s security as well as the Special Security Group (SSG) officials will take part in physical, weapon and tactical training in the next few days.

Nine Close Protection Teams ? the inner security wing which has seven members each ? are attached with the CM and his family. While five members of a team carry glocks (Austrian pistol that has 17 bullets in one magazine), one member carries a MP-5 (German sub-machine gun that fires 1,000 rounds in a minute) and the other a MP-9.

?These nine teams will practice shooting at the Commando Complex in Bahadurgarh and at the Sector 25 shooting range in Chandigarh. If possible, they will also practice at the ITBP shooting range in Bhanu,?? said an official. The security personnel will also be shown videos related to security of VVIPs and assassinations of leaders around the world.

Moreover, security personnel in the eight Advance Security Liaison Teams (ASLT), which has seven members each and perform anti-sabotage checks, will be given tactical training.

?These trainings are necessary for the security personnel to keep them physically, mentally and tactically fit as they guard VVIPs,? said Inspector General of Police-cum-Director Special Security Group Sanjeev Kalra.

General Motors Co. today announced major changes for its 26,000 salaried US workers.

The changes include terminating all traditional pensions and moving to a 401(k)-type retirement fund, an extra week of vacation time and performance-based bonuses instead of across the board pay raises.

These changes — I believe — really permit employees to share in the success of the business, while at the same time supporting our ability to be profitable, to strengthen our balance sheet and ultimately ensure our long-term viability, said Cindy Brinkley, vice president of global human resources for GM. Were really improving GMs ability to grow profitably.

Brinkley said the Detroit-based automaker will announce the bonuses during its 2011 earnings call on Thursday.

The pension changes will affect about 19,000 of the GMs white-collar workers. Every worker hired after Jan. 1, 2001 already has defined-contribution, or 401(k) plans, instead of traditional pensions.

Brinkley said the changes, which will take effect Oct. 1, are aimed at making GM more competitive. She added numerous of its peers eliminated traditional, defined-benefit pensions years ago.

Were continuing with our strategy to tie compensation to global performance, she said.

GM has the largest pension obligation of any company in the nation.

But with gas prices steadily increasing, many people like Joseph Dunn are making cost cutting moves. Dunn is the Co-owner of 5 Star Limousines in Columbia. Filling the tanks takes a chunk out of his budget.

We have six cars in our fleet. And our fuel cost per week is probably around $600-$700 a week.

Dunn and his family planned on taking a vacation to Philadelphia to see family. But now will stay in the southeast.

Unfortunately, with the cost of gas going up it does cut into our profits. But its the price of doing business.

Marion Edmonds with the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism said its a trend theyve seen the last few years. But fuel still does not add up to other expenditures.

Weve discovered historically that the kind of increases dont have a significantly impact on travel and tourism. When you put that against the cost of motel rooms, campgrounds, meals and the other expenses, its just one portion of the overall package.

However, when people choose to stay close to home,  Edmonds said it often benefits the Palmetto States economy.

We are a closer destination than places like Georgia or Florida. Sometimes people adjust those costs will decide to go to a place they remember from the past like Myrtle Beach, Charleston, rather than drive that additional distance.

In the meantime, residents can only hope prices will decrease before they hit the road.
