One year on: Kate and William still fascinate – Entertainment News Now

Monday, May 14th, 2012

One year after some two billion people around the world tuned in to watch Britains Prince William marry Kate Middleton, the global media remain captivated with the lives of the now Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

The wedding fervour, which saw a million Britons cram the streets of London on April 29, 2011 to catch a glimpse of the future king and queen, has inevitably faded with the memory of the fairy-tale dresses, uniforms and horse-drawn carriages.

But royal watchers and many members of the public believe the couple have boosted the monarchys popularity and offer an escape for a nation beset by recession, unemployment and financial insecurity.

Even if, as naysayers argue, the duke and duchess are merely celebrities whose wealth and style are out of reach of all but a few, their popularity reaches far beyond Britain.

Seacrest’s Role at NBCUniversal Will Span News, Sports and Entertainment

Thursday, May 10th, 2012

Look for Ryan Seacrest to be appearing soon on NBCs Today show and on the networks coverage of special events like the Olympics.

The appearances are included in a new contract between Mr. Seacrest and NBCUniversal. Signed Friday afternoon, the two-year contract is said to span the news, entertainment and sports divisions of NBCUniversal, giving Mr. Seacrest a chance to contribute to Today, election coverage, prime-time entertainment shows, and coverage of sporting events.

The contract reduces Mr. Seacrests on-camera role at E!, where he has been a host of E! News since 2006. He will no longer host the show each day — that stopped last January, actually, when his last contract expired — but he will continue to host and produce the channels Live From the Red Carpet shows. He will also occasionally contribute segments and celebrity interviews, according to a news release on Friday.

The announcement by NBCUniversal called the contract a groundbreaking multi-platform agreement. It had been in the works for months, designed to take advantage of the fact that Comcast (the owner of E! and other channels) last year took control of NBCUniversal (the owner of the NBC network and other channels).

In effect, the contract gives Mr. Seacrest some higher-profile work on the Summer Olympics, for instance, a role that was announced earlier this month while reducing the frequency of his work at E! News.

Ryan is an extraordinary talent who has been an important part of the Comcast family for a long time, said Steve Burke, chief executive of NBCUniversal.

We look forward to his continued role on E! and to having him appear on many new places across NBCUniversal, including the Today show and at the Olympics, Mr. Burke said, adding, This is a great example of how NBCUniversal is able to provide the perfect home for some of the best people in the business.

NBC is not, however, Mr. Seacrests exclusive home. Earlier this week, he renewed his deal to host American Idol on Fox for two more seasons.

NBC said that Mr. Seacrests title at Today would be special correspondent. He will also contribute to election coverage for NBC News, though the scope of those contributions has not yet been determined.

Lady Gaga criticizes Korean government’s decision – Entertainment Now

Sunday, May 6th, 2012

Horseback riding: In this photo released by Hyundai Card, US pop star Lady Gaga on a horse performs during her concert in Seoul, South Korea, on Friday. (AP/Hyundai Card)US pop star Lady Gaga wowed some 50,000 people in the audience at the Olympic stadium in Seoul with her provocative but creative stage costumes and performances.

Riding on to the stage on a horseback, clad in a futuristic body suit and metal headpieces designed by Italian fashion power house Giorgio Armani specially for the concert, Lady Gaga made her first official appearance here, saying the past week felt like a month to her.

The 26-year-old artist indirectly criticized the Korean government that banned under 18s to attend her concert.

“I was told that your government decided that my shows should be 18 or over So, I’ll make sure it will be!” Concert organizers checked IDs of the audience and asked them to wear a paper wrist band reading “18 above.”The state-run ratings board imposed the age limit for younger audience claiming her song “Just Dance” is inappropriate for the youth.

And captivate the audience, she did. Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way Ball”concert mesmerized the Korean audience for over two hours with innovative and breathtaking stage installation and ideas.

“[It was] imaginative and futuristic,” said Claire Hong, 45, who attended the concert with her girlfriend.

“It was fantastic and out-of-this-world show performance, but nothing like what the authorities and the Christian groups worried about.”

Lady Gagas concert drew attention not only because the Seoul concert kicks off her world tour, but also because her concert was opposed by some conservative Christian groups here, accusing her of pornography and promoting homosexuality.

However, the singer did not comment on the Christian groups protesting before and during the concert.

Friday nights event was only the second concert by a foreign artist held at the country’s largest sports and entertainment venue. The late Michael Jackson held a concert at the same arena in 1996.

After Seoul, Lady Gaga will take her pop hits and eccentric costumes to Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, New Zealand and perform six shows around Australia.

The pop artist is expected to hold 110 shows this year, including the initial 11 concerts in Asia.

Lady Gaga, whose real name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, became famous with the hits songs “Bad Romance” and “Poker Face.”

AMC Entertainment shelves IPO plan

Friday, May 4th, 2012

AMC Entertainment, the nations second-largest exhibitor, has once again scrapped plans fora stock offering, two people familiar with the matter said.

The Kansas City, Mo.-based theater chain had said in a regulatory filing last springthatitplannedto raise up to $450 millioninan initialpublic offering of stock, using the proceeds to pay down debt. Topshareholders in AMC include JPMorgan, Apollo Investment Fund and Bain Capital Investors.

But at the prompting of AMCs owners, the circuit has opted toshelve the IPO, out of concern that market conditions arentripe for a stock offering, said two sourcesfamiliar with the plans who asked not to be identified because they were not authorized to discuss the matter.

Its a tough business, said one of the sources, citing the long-term challenges faced by the exhibition industry, especially fromthe threat posed by shrinking theatrical windows — the period between when a movie is released in theaters and when itcan be viewed in the home. The biggest issue they are facing is how to navigate the collapsing of theatrical windows.

Industry-wide, the number of tickets soldin the US and Canada fell 4% last year to 1.28 billion, the lowest level since the mid-1990s. But revenue hasrebounded this year, jumping 23% in the first quarter.

This marks the thirdtime in five years that AMC has pulled back from going public. The company originally filedfor a $750-million IPO in December 2006 as private equity firms looked to recoup some of their heavy investments in the theater operator. But AMCwithdrew that offering in May 2007 after investors balked at the $17-a-share asking price. AMC then unveiled plans for a scaled-back stock offering in September 2007 but withdrew that plan a year lateramid market volatility.

Along with rival Regal Entertainment,AMC last year launcheda joint venture called Open Road Filmsthat willacquire and releaseindependentmovies.

AMC has been bulking up on the number of cinemas it controls. In May 2011,AMC acquired 92 theaters and 928 screens from Chicago-based Kerasotes Showplace Theatres, the nations sixth-largestmovie chain. AMC operates 347 theaters and 5,048 screens in the US and Canada.

Ryan Noonan, a spokesman for AMC,declined to confirm or deny whether the circuit had officially abandoned its IPO plans but said: The IPO process is ongoing and I do not have a time line to share.

AMC posted a loss of $82.7 million on revenue of $1.93 billion in the 39 weeks ended Dec. 29, 2011, compared to profit of $36.88 million on revenues of $1.9 billion during the same period in 2010, according a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The company cited higher interest expenses, investment losses in Beverly Hills-based 3-D technology company RealD and costs related to its acquisition of Kerasotes.

Legend still drawing the crowds

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012

One has to wonder if a lifetime spent in the comic-book business hasnt bought Stan Lee the fountain of youth.

The co-creator of The Amazing Spider-Man, The X-Men, Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, The Avengers and a huge portion of the vast Marvel Comics universe (he has more than 500 characters to his name) will turn 90 in December, but if hes slowed down at all, its hard to tell.

The writer, editor and media personality is still Marvel Entertainments greatest spokesman, promoting the company and making cameos in the many blockbuster films based on his characters (well have to see if he shows up in The Avengers, set for release this coming Friday).

Meanwhile, as the chairman of his own POW! Entertainment venture, Lees got his hands on a striking number of projects, including an NHL-themed superhero team, an action-musical and a multimedia comics imprint for children, Stan Lees Kids Universe.

For the energetic Lee, retirement is simply not in the cards.

I think if you enjoy what you do its like playing and you cant stop, says Lee. Most men want to retire at a certain age. I cant wait to retire so I can golf or travel, or whatever it is. But Im already doing what I want to do. Its so much fun.

Born Stanley Lieber in New York City, Lee, whose family barely scraped by during the Great Depression, was always ambitious.

He dreamt of becoming a famous actor and when he got his first job in comics in 1939, working as an office assistant at Timely Comics (the earliest incarnation of Marvel), he saw it as a mere stepping stone, certain that he was destined to write The Great American Novel.

But by 1941 Lee was editor-in chief and head writer at Timely and, with a family to support, he was still holding those positions 20 years later.

By then he was frustrated by the limitations of comic books and determined to leave the industry.

Convinced he was on his way out, Lee began writing comics as he wanted to read them. Along with his collaborators, most notably artists Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, he brought a new sophistication to his stories, imbuing such creations as Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four with a humanity not previously seen in the genre.

Despite their superhuman powers, these new Marvel age heroes were flawed and emotional and they faced real-world dilemmas that made them relatable to a more mature audience. Suddenly, Marvel Comics were being read not only by the usual prepubescent crowd, but also by the residents of college dorms.

I didnt target them, but one conscious effort I made was to use college-level vocabulary, Lee says. He theorized that by not talking down to his readers, he might appeal to a larger base, and, if younger readers had to look up a word or two in the dictionary thats not the worst thing that could happen.

Slowly, comics began to be taken seriously, a step into the modern era of the graphic novel where the genre is more often acknowledged as valid literature rather than disposable trash.

Lee and his collaborators had revolutionized the mainstream comic book business. But the politics of that move were complicated.

Feds bust rappers in alleged nationwide Ecstasy ring

Tuesday, May 1st, 2012

(CBS/AP) FAIRFIELD, Calif. – Several rappers connected to a San Francisco Bay area music label are among those charged with taking part in a nationwide Ecstasy ring.

According to CBS Sacramento, federal agents say rappers were dealing Ecstasy and other drugs across the country.

Federal prosecutors said Tuesday that investigators seized 45,000 Ecstasy pills, crack cocaine and heroin from the Northern California-based drug trafficking operation.

The Contra Costa Times reports many of the 25 suspects are associated with Thizz Entertainment, a popular label on the Bay Areas rap scene. Thizz is slang for the feeling of being high on Ecstasy.

Federal investigators say some of the artists and their associates are using rap music as cover for criminal activity.

Thizz Entertainment has deep roots in Vallejo, and police say some of the labels associates also have deep criminal pasts dating back to the 1980s involving violent takeover robberies and murder. Many of the labels lyrics, the DEA said, promote Ecstasy use.

US Attorney Benjamin Wagner says suspects from various California cities, New York and Oklahoma City were arrested Thursday. Some suspects charged have yet to be taken into custody.

Prosecutors say federal agents uncovered a distribution network centered in Vallejo that trafficked in Ecstasy, cocaine, heroin, Oxycodone and marijuana.

A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for May 4 in Sacramento federal court.

Criticism over Lohans White House dinner invite

WASHINGTON, April 28 (UPI) — Meghan McCain, John McCains daughter, criticized Fox News Greta Van Susteren for inviting Lindsay Lohan to Saturdays White House Correspondents Dinner.

McCain, who said she still plans to attend the event, took to Twitter to voice her frustration over the invitation for Lohan, who has had a checkered past, The Washington Post reported Friday.

Let me get this straight Greta Van [Susteren] is bringing Lindsay Lohan to the WHC Dinner but has a moral offense to Louie C.K? she wrote.

McCain was referring to Van Susterens blog post last month in which she refused to attend the Radio and Television Correspondents Association Dinner because they hired the pig, Louis CK, to be their headliner. Van Susteren took offense to jokes Louis CK had made at the expense of Sarah Palins son Trig, who has Down syndrome.

Meanwhile, Lohan missed her Friday afternoon flight from Los Angeles to Washington, sparking concerns the actress would be unable to attend the event, E! Online reported. She was spotted boarding a red-eye flight, giving her plenty of time to make the Saturday evening dinner.

Lohan changed her flight; simple as that. No issues [and] she is looking forward to the dinner, her representative told E!

Jazz fest not tripped up by cancellations

NEW ORLEANS, April 28 (UPI) — Bruce Springsteen, Jimmy Buffett and Cee Lo Green were announced as last-minute headliners for the New Orleans Jazz Fest after several cancellations.

John Mayer, Eddie Vedder and Jill Scott all cancelled their appearances at the 43rd New Orleans Jazz Fest, which began Friday and goes through Sunday, The New Orleans Times-Picayune reported.

Health problems kept Mayer (throat) and Vedder (back) from appearing, while Jill Scott bowed out to film a remake of Steel Magnolias, the newspaper said.

Happenstance allowed organizers to fill the gaps with the equally big names of Springsteen and the E Street Band, Buffett and Green.

The trio join The Eagles, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, the Foo Fighters, the Beach Boys, Al Green, Florence + the Machine, Bon Iver, Frankie Beverly and Maze, the Zac Brown Band, Bonnie Raitt, and Ne-Yo, in addition to dozens of local New Orleans acts, the newspaper said.

Seacrest NBC contract includes Today

LOS ANGELES, April 28 (UPI) — US television and radio personality Ryan Seacrest has signed a two-year contract with NBC, extending his duties to the Today show and prime time news.

As part of the deal, Seacrest will scale back his presence on E! and become a special correspondent for Today and will contribute to NBC prime time news, entertainment programming and Olympics coverage this summer, The Hollywood Reporter said Friday.

We look forward to his continued role on E! and to having him appear on many new places across NBCUniversal, including the Today show and at the Olympics, said NBCUniversal Chief Executive Steve Burke. This is a great example of how NBCUniversal is able to provide the perfect home for some of the best people in the business.

Im especially looking forward to working with all the stellar on-air talents and producing executives involved in NBCs news, entertainment and sports divisions, and Im eager and excited to take on this broader new role, Seacrest said.

Seacrest last week renewed his contract with American Idol, signing on for another two years as host for $30 million. The dollar amount on his NBCUniversal contract was not reported.

Cannon, Carey renew vows in Paris

PARIS, April 28 (UPI) — Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey renewed their wedding vows atop the Eiffel Tower in Paris, People reported.

The couple, who will celebrate their four-year wedding anniversary Monday, flew into France Friday for the ceremony later that night.

Tonight was an incredible night, Carey Tweeted. I cant express how amazing it was to renew our vows in Paris at the top of the Eiffel Tower.

Carey wore a white mermaid dress with spaghetti straps and a black bow, and Cannon was in a white suit with a black tie, the magazine reported.

Following the renewal ceremony, the parents of 1-year-old twins were spotted having dinner at Le Jules Verne restaurant at the Eiffel Tower.

Horror Entertainment for the New Age: Liner Notes from the Resident Evil 6 …

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

By all indications, Capcom got the memo Resident Evil 5 just wasnt that scary. But at the companys yearly Captivate event in Rome last week, series producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi uttered something that truly sent shivers down the spines of every hardened Biohazard fan in attendance: its not just about survival horror any more.

Shock and awe! Heresy of the highest order! But not long after sensing the mounting unrest swelling in the audience, the four-time veteran to the famously horrific survival series was quick to temper his claim with a reassuring reprieve its more than that. We want to deliver a big package here.

That big package is Resident Evil 6: a tremendously ambitious project with an equally prodigious development team to match. With more than 600 people involved with the game worldwide, Resident Evil 6 not only marks one of Capcoms biggest productions to date, but also provides a clear testament to the series dominant position amid the companys totem pole of iconic intellectual properties. With the sole exception of 2008, there has been at least one Resident Evil game every year since the series genesis in 1996. In just the past year alone, there have been three Resident Evil releases across numerous platforms.

Just going by the numbers, its clear that Capcoms put a lot of time and corporate dollars into their new company darling (sorry, Mega Man). But more than simply churning out the franchises next blockbuster hit, Capcom seems determined to accomplish a nearly impossible goal: pleasing everyone. And that includes the folks whose first and favorite Resident Evil games predate Leons action-packed excursion into dour Spanish villages.

Kobayashi notes: what were trying to do is put back all the thrills, chills, and spills that you would expect from the Resident Evil franchise, but were taking everything to the next level. Everything that you love about past Resident Evil games, were maxing that out and putting it into this game to create something huge and nothing youve ever experienced before.

Resident Evil 6 is what Kobayashi and crew deem the next vanguard in horror entertainment, a histrionic term for what the team believes will not only rectify but improve upon all the things the series has done up to this point, action and all. Yes, zombies are back. The real ones. Moving and shooting is finally in there, too. But beyond the surface level bullet points of mechanical and design improvements lies a greater statement to what the latest game in the series is brashly trying to accomplish–absolutely everything.

Multiple characters, multiple playstyles

Remember the A and B character scenarios from games like Resident Evil 2? Thats back. But more than just presenting different perspectives that ultimately intertwine into a single storyline, Resident Evil 6 is using its three separate mini-campaigns as the games primary means of fracturing series mercurial identity into three distinct playstyles.

Leon Kennedys tale begins in the sleepy fictional American town of Tall Oaks, which has recently come under attack by bioterrorists after a visit by the president of the United States. Framed for murdering the zombified chief executive, Leon embarks upon a cold trail for the truth with white house agent Helena Harper in a campaign that most closely resembles the classic creepy corridors and suspenseful high tension gameplay of classic Resident Evil fame.

Meanwhile, megabuff monster puncher Chris Redfield can be found on the streets of China investigating a bioterrorist attack in a scenario similar to the action packed trimmings of Resident Evil 5. Apparently leading up to this, there will be another chapter set six months in the past that will impact his life in the way he makes decisions and thinks about fighting bioterrorism, says game director Eiichiro Sasaki. What youre going to be seeing in this game is a Chris you arent familiar with. All clues point to something involving his new buddy coming along for the ride, Piers Nivans, a talented BSAA sniper.

Then theres Jake Muller, who was indeed confirmed by Sasaki to be Albert Weskers biological son. (Apparently, the atmosphere wasnt the only thing his old man saturated.) Working as a mercenary in a war torn eastern European countr, Jake runs into a familiar face–who Sasaki also confirmed to be Sherry Birkin–begging him to come with her, claiming that his special blood could save the world. Out of all of the campaigns described thus far, the particularities of Jakes chapter were definitely the most cryptic; something circling around the idea of escaping the country, and being relentlessly chased by pursuers.

Also, Sasaki seems to have a huge crush on Sherry Birkin. (Whoo! *sounding flustered* I like Sherry Birkin.)

Though each character will begin their journeys on separate ends of the earth, their travels will all ultimately intersect in the fictional Chinese city of Lanshiang. What will ultimately come to a head there is anyones guess.

Monster Mash

Its true, the Romero zombies are back–but plain ol shamblers just wont do for 2012. Apart from being able to move swiftly and hurdle over obstacles, some outliers of this fearsome new breed of undead may even be armed with the weapons and implements they were holding onto while still alive fending off other zombies; an interesting gameplay wrinkle that culminates in allowing you to pull off contextual melee kills with whatever object youre able to wrest from their cold dead hands.

But fans of las plagas, the majini, and every other permutation of the fast moving, insect addled humanoid need not fret, the new Javo enemy seems apt to take their place as the next big bug to squash. It isnt just their ability to use any weapon type thats cause for concern; when parts of their bodies are shot off, their quick regenerative system allows them to regrow them into grotesque new mutated forms. With all manner of body parts prone to a secondary mutation, its an enemy that Kobayashi believes will be an entirely different experience each time you fight them, depending on how you attack them.

The most mysterious new creepy crawly is one theyve appropriately saved for last. As it turns out, the newly concocted C-Virus carries the unique property of turning the humans its infected into cocoon shaped husks called chrysalids. Whatever pops out is a total mystery, one that isnt totally human, and one theyve neglected to show during the presentation. Now theres suspense, for you.

Reinventing the third-person shooter, once more

Sasaki believes that the idea of horror goes beyond spooky monster closets and the games mere phrasing of events; somewhere amid the streams of language and concepts, his own personal definition of fright becomes more closely married to the feeling of tension and immediacy, both on the inside as well as on the fingertips. A new style of horror, as the team mystifyingly calls it, and one thats irrevocably tied to perfecting the series signature control scheme.

Here, its clear that the action-oriented cues set in motion by Resident Evil 4 have no signs of slowing down. Quite the contrary; in fact, its rapidly evolving into something even more obtusely action packed than ever before. While were returning to the roots of horror in Resident Evil, were not returning to the roots of the [tank based] control scheme. This time you will be able to move and shoot, among other shooting actions like jumping on your back and rolling around.

The challenge, Sasaki describes, is coming up with a stress free control scheme that achieves a balance between smoothness of motion while maintaining that crucial element of horror. One such example Sasaki brings up involves the new back dive mechanic. If youre on your back, you might think youd have an easier time picking enemies off, but we made it so some enemies will jump on top of you or lunge at your throat, and you have to get your gun out in time to shoot them off you.

Other new innovations, such as leaning left and right during an upright gun stance or crawling on your back during the backwards prone position, tease at some other potential applications down the road, invariably pointing towards a control scheme thats set to empower the player in more ways than ever before. Can a game that allows you to do this much still be scary? The Silent Hill series recent downslide into a more combat oriented pace proved to be one of the major factors of its undoing. Resident Evil, it seems, is trying to replace that horrific feeling of helplessness (read: feeble tank controls) with the fight or flight thrill of the moment. Pulse pounding action, in the development teams eyes, comes in more flavors than one.

So is it scary?

In a manner of speaking, sure. If your scientific measure of scaritude entails moody, moonlit scenery, chilling bouts of silence, and eerie, pervasive imagery punctuated by the occasional jumpy moment, then the game certainly had all of that in spades.

The onstage gameplay demo for Captivate 2012 takes place shortly after Leon ices the president in the debut trailer. After taking a moment to collect their wits, Leon and Helena plot an escape from their current location–an old, countryside university. Cue the flashing light bulb above your head. The parallels to the first games mansion are certainly there; the creepy banquet halls, antique baroque furniture, and shadowy, light-deprived corridors evoked a classic sense of minimalist Resident Evil with measured pacing through and through. In fact, it wasnt until the harrowing final moments of escaping through the zombie infested parking lot that Leon and Helena were finally given the opportunity to unleash their payload upon the shambling masses.

For nearly the entire duration of the presentation, the game seemed quite pleased with simply stringing players along on a tense and nearly action-less subplot involving Leon and Helena coming upon a sick university staff member searching for his daughter. Theres obviously a red flag here, and the game knows you know it. During the long stretches of roaming through the universitys musky halls, the guy frequently slips in and out of view, often obscured by the shadows but always within earshot because of that telltale cough. In one particularly nasty hacking spell, he even became unresponsive for just a slight moment…but apparently the worst had come to pass. For now.

After a labored search, the collective ears of the search party perk up to a nearby noise which turns out to be the daughter (who pops out with the shrill shriek of a classic horror music cue, no less). Shes just as ill, if not in slightly worse condition, as dear old dad, but the three still manage to make haste towards the nearest emergency elevator. Theres coughing, more coughing, and eventually a peaceful slip into silence. The father then blubbers, but even that eventually fades into the darkness too.

Its quiet, but not for long. A mushy and muffled yet all too familiar sound fills the narrow space of that elevator, and before long, Leon is forced to draw a bead on daughter eating father.

The future of fear

Whats left are a few straggling bits of information; co-op is back, with proper drop-in drop-out support (no need for backtracking to checkpoints this time). Mercenary mode will be unlocked from the beginning, though Kobayashi urges players to play through the trio of protags first for the complete experience.

Oh, and apparently the game is also coming a full month earlier than expected.

Thanks to the immense response from the debut trailer earlier this year, Kobayashi was able to negotiate with the rest of the dev team to deliver Resident Evil 6 on a slightly accelerated timeline–a slightly worrisome move for a game attempting to do this much. But for all it aspires to accomplish, having one less month of development may very well be the least of its concerns. Still, its hard not to be impressed by the current results.

Resident Evil 6 will be out on October 2nd, 2012 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. For more information, you can check out our interview with Kobayashi and Sasaki embedded for your convenience here, as well as in future Side Mission posts down the road.
